A company built to hold projects.

The name

Separator Brook was a shaft at the iron mine on Lyon Mountain, in the northern Adirondacks. The Chateaugay Ore and Iron Company worked that mountain from the late 1800s until the mines closed for good in 1967, sinking shafts more than 2,000 feet into it.

The ore was unusually pure, and the wire drawn from it was known nationally for it — Lyon Mountain iron went into the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, and the Golden Gate. A hundred-odd years later the mine is closed, the town is small, and three of the most recognizable structures in the country are still hanging from what came out of it.

A separator is the machine that pulls the ore out of the waste rock. Everything useful is already in what you dug up; the work is getting it apart from everything else. That is a fair description of most work worth doing, and it is what this company is trying to do.

What the company does

Separator Brook holds and operates independent projects. Each one is its own piece of work rather than a version of the last, and each gets its own page on this site when it starts.

The current project is Stand & Swing, an iPhone and Apple Watch app for scoring clay target shooting, in development. That is the whole list at the moment — it isn't a highlight reel with the rest hidden somewhere.

• We don't announce dates we can't hold. Work ships when it's right rather than when a calendar said it would.
